AB OBJECTIVE: Clinical relevance of HIV RNA positive rate and quantitative
measurement of HIV RNA in Japanese HIV carriers and AIDS patients in
various disease stages was determined using a quantitative HIV RNA assay
employing the bDNA probe method (bDNA HIV). METHODS: A total of 68
subjects, who were anti-HIV positive ranging from Stage II(asymptomatic)
to Stage IV C2 in the CDC classification, were selected for the study.
bDNA HIV was run on the plasma specimens collected from those subjects
and compared with P24 antigen test and HIV isolation in cell culture.
Quantitation of HIV RNA was also carried out in the patients treated
with AZT and ddI. RESULTS: Among 68 HIV infected cases, positive rate of
HIV RNA, viral isolation and P24 antigen was 54.2%, 47.2% and 25.8%,
respectively. Respective Positive rate of HIV RNA in Stage II and Stage
IV C1 patients was 45.1% and 66.1%. The level of HIV RNA increased as
the disease progressed and decreased after AZT or ddI treatment despite
no significant changes observed by P24 antigen test. DISCUSSION AND
CONCLUSIONS: Monitoring the prevalence of HIV RNA and quantitating HIV
RNA in the HIV infected cases may be very significant in understanding
of the progression of the disease or in evaluation of antiviral
treatment.
